Language Use in Internet Mediated Communication
Are you a student of Japanese?

My name is Sarah Pasfield-Neofitou and I am conducting a research
project with Associate Professor Helen Marriott and Dr. Robyn
Spence-Brown of the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics
towards a PhD in Japanese Studies at Monash University. This means that
I will be writing a thesis which is the equivalent of approximately
100,000 words.

I am seeking to recruit students who are students of Japanese at Monash
University and native speakers of Japanese with whom they use Internet
communication as volunteers for the study in order to examine issues of
language use in intercultural Internet chat. If you are aged 18 years or
older and have one or more Japanese-speaking online contacts, you are
invited to participate in a research project entitled Language Use in
Internet Mediated Communication.

I would like to examine any online communication you are happy to
provide me with, and conduct two interviews about your online
experience, including your perceptions of language use online.

Manifest 2007 - Yes, we had a table!

We did Manifest a few weeks ago, table and all, and actually didn't do too bad. We made enough to go Manga Shopping for the library. (you can now read Vagabond, Fushugi Yuugi, Full Metal Panic and more at the manga library)

Fresh Japanese Wave Threatens Korean Pop Culture - It wasn't long ago Korea was competing with Japan for domination of the Asian pop-culture market yet now it turns out just rehashing Japanese ideas into Korean tv shows isn't going to work forever.

Bible, Shakespeare get Japanese manga treatment - This one's a bit naff in that there are plenty of other organisations using manga to get kids involved but I thought I might as well post about it.

It's very easy to forget that most european countries were into anime way before the rest of us and probably have a larger fanbase (probably.) "Just about every Italian knows shows such as 'Lupin III' and 'The Rose of Versailles,' and the word 'anime' itself has come to mean only Japanese animation. Well it's been a while since my last post, it's that time of year when studying gets intense for the uni crowd. However I return bearing gifts from Youtube. On August the 12th 2006, a Japanese variety show aired a special on Japanese otaku girls. Doujicon was yesterday and we were out in force, promoting the site, the comics, the manga library and good hygiene. From 10 to 5.30 it was quite a long day of selling books, watching indie animation, buying books and playing DS while ignoring customers. Congrats to Avi on a really well done first convention! We couldn't believe the amount of people there (not just otaku either, normal people started popping up and freaking us out.) The manga team (Daein, Nathan, Romesh, David and Rebecca) said they had fun too, not that they can be trusted. Anyway PHOTOS!

We had the good fortune of being next to David's table.

For some reason Rebecca and I always end up manning the table.

Hate-Inciting Manga Is a Hit In Japan - I'm sure I've posted before about the controversial (and best selling) manga series Ken Kan Ryuu (Hating The Korean Wave. From Donga.com we get a Korean response to the series which is still continuing in Japan with a new book.

MDN reveals 'Manglish' - MDN Mainichi, in the vein of Lost in Scanlation has begun putting samples of manga on their site. The innovation is that if you hover your mouse over the Japanese text, the English pops up. Way to rip off our idea Mainichi!

3 favorite manga going strong at the 30-year mark - Daily Yomiuri discusses Japan's long running manga series of 30 years; Glass Kamen, Kochira Kame and Oke no Monsho. (Read it quick before it becomes a subscriber only article)

Boilet's bridge to France - Yomiuri kicks another goal with an their article on French artist Frederic Boilet and his innovating manga anthology which features manga by Japanese artists and French on the topic of living in Japan. (Again read it before Yomiuri makes it available only to subscribers because they're bastards)

Scanlation Update: Comic Party vs Fujyoushi

Just uploaded page 3 of Multi/maniax which is a Comic Party parody that deals with female otaku or fujyoushi (腐女子) which I've talked about in a previous news post. I think this comic is a great depiction of how the Japanese male otaku view their female counterparts (ultimately negative.)

New Manga Project" Multi/Maniax

We just recently got permission from the guys at Multi/Maniax to start translating their comic. Multi/Maniax is a parody doujin of hit anime's such as To Heart, Air, Kannon, Tsuki Hime and Rozen Maiden so should be a lot of fun and relevant to today's otaku. We've put two pages so far, check it out.
